I’m a Melbourne-based French writer, and I am staying in Tianjin in July and August 2011, to teach French at Alliance Francaise, study Chinese, and discover Northern China.
This blog is to record both my impressions of life in this Chinese city – one of the richest in the country, with a colonial past, and history of dialogue with the outside world – and reflect on cosmopolitan coastal China.
Some Chinese and non-Chinese friends have told me that I should go further West, in order to discover ‘the real China’. Personal preference, the result of a Mediterranean background, or of growing up in Strasbourg, I have always preferred mixed, interstitial border cities, where cultures meet each other and a common space can be found. Hence the name for this blog – ‘the fake China’.
